ADA Signage in Orange County and Los Angeles

There are many technical and legal language surrounding ADA signage requirements for businesses that can get very confusing. Thankfully, at Instant Signs and Banners, we are here to help. We provide the best ADA signage Orange County has to offer while staying on top of local regulations.

What Is an ADA Sign?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was published in 1990 by the U.S. Department of Justice, prohibiting discrimination against anyone with disabilities. As a part of the 2010 ADA Standard for Accessible Design (SAD), ADA signage requirements were released and became enforceable, as we know them today.

Where Are ADA Signs Required?

As a general rule of thumb, ADA signage is required at the entrance of each doorway of a building. Each room in a public space should be marked with identifying signage, as per federal regulations.

ADA requirements also mandate interior signs and exterior signs throughout building locations.

What Buildings Require ADA Signs?

All businesses with employees, clients, or customers must follow the regulations as set forth from the SAD. The following buildings require ADA signs per the SAD:

  • Government facilities (local, county, and state)
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Sales or retail establishments
  • Stores and shops
  • Service establishments
  • Lodging facilities
  • Theaters
  • Recreation facilities
  • Assembly areas
  • Private museums
  • Places of education
  • Factories
  • Warehouses
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Office buildings
  • Public areas of apartment buildings
  • Other facilities whose operations affect commerce
  • Commercial areas in private residences

Where Should ADA Signs Be Mounted?

According to the SAD, three location components must apply to tactile braille signage.

Signage at a Door

If a door has signage, tactile braille should be included alongside the door at the latch side.

Tactile Character Signage

Signs with tactile braille must be located so that a floor space of 18” by 18” minimum, centered on the characters, is provided beyond the arc of any door swing between the closed position and 45-degree open position.

Location of Tactile Characters

Signs must be located a minimum of 48” above the finish floor or ground surface.
